Short answer

As of 10 October 2026, Google’s Perspective API stays active until 31 December 2026 and then ends [1]. Its site stopped taking new usage and quota requests after February 2026 and offers no direct migration support [1]. The nearest replacements that return per-category scores are OpenAI’s moderation endpoint (free), Azure AI Content Safety, Google Cloud Natural Language moderateText and Amazon Comprehend, or a self-hosted model such as Detoxify.

StormDoor makes one of the tools in this comparison. Its API is not yet open for signups. It is not a toxicity scorer (see the StormDoor section), and it is listed only for the cases it covers.

Key facts#

  • As of 10 October 2026, Google’s Perspective API remains active until 31 December 2026 [1]. #
  • Google’s Perspective API notice, read on 10 October 2026, says Google will not offer direct migration support [1]. #
  • As of 10 October 2026, OpenAI’s moderation guide documents its moderation endpoint as free to use [2]. #
  • Microsoft’s Azure Retail Prices API listed Azure AI Content Safety text analysis at $0.375 per 1,000 text records (1 record = up to 1,000 characters) in the regions we sampled on 10 October 2026 [4]. #
  • As of 10 October 2026, Amazon Comprehend toxicity detection is billed per 100-character unit; see AWS’s pricing page for the rate [8]. #
  • As of 10 October 2026, Detoxify is Apache-2.0 licensed and runs locally [14]. #
  • As of 10 October 2026, Hive text moderation requires an annual contract, and its self-serve demo API is capped at 100 requests per day [10][11]. #
  • None of the scorers in this comparison returns values equivalent to Perspective’s scores, so any threshold tuned on Perspective must be recalibrated. #

When does Perspective API stop working?#

Perspective’s own notice says: “The service will remain active until December 31, 2026.” It adds that usage requests and increased quota requests “will be addressed until February 2026”, and “We will not be offering direct migration support” [1]. The notice lists no attributes. Perspective is commonly described as returning 0-to-1 scores for attributes such as toxicity, severe toxicity, insult, profanity, identity attack and threat; Google’s model-card page did not render for us, so treat that attribute list as unverified.

Which alternatives exist, and how do they compare?#

Prices are as published on 10 October 2026, in USD, with the unit each vendor uses. Per-1,000 figures are not like-for-like because units differ (requests, records, characters). Where a vendor’s price was unclear to us, the table points to the vendor’s pricing page instead of a number.

Option What it returns Languages as stated Published price Free tier Self-host
OpenAI omni-moderation-latest [2] Flags and scores for 13 categories: harassment (and /threatening), hate (and /threatening), illicit (and /violent), self-harm (and /intent, /instructions), sexual (and /minors), violence (and /graphic). Text and images. Not stated on the docs page Free to use Free; rate limits not on the page No
Azure AI Content Safety, Analyze text [3][4][5] Hate, sexual, violence, self-harm with multiple severity levels; built-in profanity blocklists and custom blocklists in Studio Trained and tested on Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese; others may work with varying quality Standard: $0.375 per 1,000 text records (Azure Retail Prices API; sampled regions uksouth, uaenorth, polandcentral) F0 tier: 5,000 text records per month, 5 requests per second No
Google Cloud Natural Language moderateText [6][7] Confidence 0.00 to 1.00 for safety attributes including Toxic, Insult, Profanity, Derogatory, Violent, Sexual, plus topic labels such as Firearms & Weapons and Politics Not stated on the page we read See the vendor’s pricing page [7]; a unit is 100 characters First 50,000 units per month No
Amazon Comprehend toxicity detection [8][9] Overall toxicity 0 to 1 plus labels GRAPHIC, HARASSMENT_OR_ABUSE, HATE_SPEECH, INSULT, PROFANITY, SEXUAL, VIOLENCE_OR_THREAT The API reference lists several language codes but also states “Currently, English is the only supported language” See the vendor’s pricing page [8]; billed per 100-character unit None found for this API No
Hive text moderation [10][11] Multi-head classifier (sexual, hate, violence, bullying, promotions, external links) with severity levels, plus rule-based pattern matching “~30 languages” $0.50 per 1,000 requests Demo API limited to 100 requests per day; text moderation requires an annual contract No
Sightengine text moderation [12][13] Rule-based profanity with intensity levels, personal-information detection, links, spam; separate classification models Pass an ISO 639-1 lang code; full list not retrieved Starter $29 per month for 10,000 operations (about $2.90 per 1,000); Pro $99 for 40,000; $0.002 per extra operation 2,000 operations per month, 500 per day No
Detoxify (open source) [14] Toxicity classes from the Jigsaw datasets, including an “unbiased” model with identity-attack output Multilingual model trained on 7 languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian Free; you pay for compute n/a Yes, Apache-2.0
Llama Guard (Meta) [15][16] Generative safety classifier; not a per-attribute scorer Llama Guard 3 8B page tags English Free weights; you pay for GPUs n/a Yes, under Meta’s own licence (tagged llama3.1 for Guard 3, other for Guard 4); not an OSI open-source licence, read it before commercial use

Notes on caveats:

  • OpenAI. The docs page states no terms about who may use the endpoint beyond one rule: do not send known or suspected child sexual abuse material [2]. Data goes to a US provider; check OpenAI’s current terms for your case. The endpoint does not target plain profanity as a category.
  • Azure. The pricing page itself showed “$-” for the standard rate; the figure above comes from Microsoft’s public Retail Prices API and may differ by region [4][5].
  • Google. moderateText also returns topic categories (Finance, Politics, Legal) that Perspective never scored, so a naive threshold will fire on unrelated content.
  • Amazon. The pricing page’s rate for toxicity detection was not clearly readable on 10 October 2026, so we give no number; toxicity detection is not on the page’s list of free-tier APIs [8].
  • Hive. Self-serve small customers are pointed to a separate vision-language-model product [10].

Where does StormDoor fit?#

StormDoor’s /v1/profanity and /v1/spam gates do two narrower jobs than Perspective did. They are not toxicity scorers: they do not rate harassment, hate, insult or threat on a scale, and nothing in them replaces Perspective’s TOXICITY or IDENTITY_ATTACK scores.

What they do cover:

  • Word-list profanity with obfuscation handling. /v1/profanity matches whole words against per-language lists for 12 languages (en, sv, no, da, fi, de, nl, fr, es, it, pt, pl). It collapses repeated letters, folds common leetspeak and reconstructs spaced-out words such as f.u.c.k. Whole-word matching keeps place names like Scunthorpe clean. Text in a language without a list is not checked [17][18].
  • Spam. /v1/spam runs rule checks (link density, invisible characters, mixed-script lookalikes, shouting, known spam phrases, off-platform contact invitations) and, on paid plans, a model classifier that emits spam.likely_spam as a separately labelled finding [19].

Price: the API is not yet available (waitlist). Planned launch pricing is 1 credit per profanity call and 3 credits when the spam model runs; Starter would be $19 per month for 25,000 credits. A one-time 5,000-credit trial is planned, with no free API plan. StormDoor has no customers yet and no published accuracy benchmark.

If your Perspective use was “block rude words in comments”, the profanity gate fits. If it was “score how hateful or harassing this is”, pick a scorer from the table.

How do I migrate off Perspective API?#

  1. Map attributes. List which Perspective attributes your code reads. Map each to the closest category (for example INSULT to Comprehend INSULT or Google Insult; IDENTITY_ATTACK to OpenAI hate). Categories are not equivalent definitions.
  2. Recalibrate thresholds. Do not reuse a cut-off such as 0.8. Score a labelled sample of your own comments with the new service and pick thresholds from the precision and recall you need. Azure returns severity levels, not probabilities.
  3. Check language coverage. Count your traffic by language. Amazon’s documentation points to English only; Detoxify covers 7 languages; Azure names 8 tested languages.
  4. Measure latency and limits. Hosted APIs add a network hop per comment; self-hosted models add GPU or CPU cost. Test p95 under your own load, and note rate limits (Azure F0 is 5 requests per second [3]).
  5. Decide the failure mode. Choose what happens when the new service times out: publish unmoderated, queue for review, or reject.
  6. Check data handling. Comments are user data. Confirm each vendor’s retention and sub-processor terms before sending them.
  7. Run in shadow mode until 31 December 2026 so both systems score the same traffic.

Method#

Every vendor fact was read from the vendor’s own page on 10 October 2026 (links in Sources). Where a page did not render or gave conflicting numbers, we say so in the table notes. We ran no accuracy tests; all capability statements are vendor-reported. Prices exclude tax, support plans and egress.
